Choice Of Border

Article Posted On: April 9, 2024

A custom rug isn't truly custom if you're limited to one type of border.  Only The Perfect Rug allows you to choose the material and style of border to finish your design:

Serged Border

Serged

Our recommended technique for most rugs is serging, where we utilize wool thread on the rug material to sew the border.

Mitered Border

Mitered Canvas

A cotton canvas border featuring hidden stitching, with mitered corners varying in width from 1 1/2” to 2 1/2”.

Lapped Border

Lapped Canvas

A cotton canvas border that features concealed stitching, with corners that overlap, ranging in width from 1/2” to 2 1/2”.

Barely There Border

Barely There

A narrow cotton binding is stitched around the edge of the rug, with only a minimal amount of material visible on the rug's surface, resulting in an elegant and understated final touch.

For most custom-designed rugs, we recommend serging for edge finishing. We have curated the highest quality wool thread in a wide variety wide selection of colors. Our artisan rugmakers then securely stitch the border to give a polished look.

Another popular border choice is canvas, available in a variety of widths, from a narrow half-inch up to a more prominent two-and-a-half inches. A 100% cotton canvas border is skillfully added to your rug with hidden stitching, creating a seamless and clean finish. Select either a lapped or mitre-cut corner.

For a modern and understated finish, we offer the option of stitching an extremely narrow cotton binding we call Barely There.  This technique ensures that only a minimal amount of material is visible on the face of the rug resulting in a sleek and refined look.
