What drew you to the world of interior design, and what continues to fuel your creativity in the field?
From an early age, I had a passion for design and I was always focused on optimizing space to make the most out of a room. One of my favorite hobbies as a kid was rearranging and decorating my room. Designing always felt natural to me, as it allows me to flex my creativity and problem solving skills. Mixing patterns, colors, and textures to create spaces that reflect the unique personalities of my clients and fit their needs for functionality and liveability - combining approachability and luxury. It’s so rewarding to be able to design spaces that people love and enjoy.
What is your idea of great design?
I believe homes should be comfortable, inviting spaces that elevate the everyday, creating liveable luxury. Great design showcases a client's unique self. We don't need to stick to a certain style or chase the newest trend… Instead, we focus on listening to our clients and designing with versatility. Get things you like, notice what those "likes" have in common, and the design will unfold naturally and organically.
Do you have a signature element or trademark design feature that you incorporate into most of your projects (e.g., specific color palettes, materials, or layout techniques)?
I lean more toward a transitional design style, creating spaces that are full of visual interest, yet grounded and easy on the eye. While each design is unique to a client's personal style, I try to incorporate color and pattern through wallpaper, upholstery, drapery, art, and accessories. I also believe every room can benefit from a mix of old and new - incorporating chic, vintage items (furniture, lighting, art, and accessories) for a collected, intentional look that can't be bought right from a catalogue.
How do you strike a balance between current trends and timeless design in your projects?
When designing any type of space, it’s important to keep this balance between new and old. I always try to keep a space grounded with timeless design elements, such as decorative millwork, built-in bookshelves, and marble countertops, and blend them with pieces that can change at a later date, such as wallpaper, wall art, custom colorful pillows, and textured rugs. High quality wool, sisal, and jute rugs are timeless, and can lend themselves to a multitude of design styles based on their color palette, pattern, and paired furnishings.
In what ways do rugs influence the overall atmosphere and ambiance of a space? How do they contribute to creating a cohesive design while enhancing comfort, style, and functionality?
Rugs lay the foundation for a well-designed room, creating a stylish anchor that sets the tone for the room's look and feel. The right rug can make a bold statement or create an elegant and understated base for the rest of the room. It lends coziness and comfort to whichever space it's in, and can make the space seem larger and more luxe.
